Pop artist Ke$ha is currently having her creative expression taken away by her music labels right now because of her former producer, Dr. Luke. Ke$ha filed a lawsurt against Dr. Luke for sexual assault, battery and sexual harassment. He has countersued her for public defamation.
The reason this is an issue with freedom of expression is because Ke$ha is not being allowed to create music under her label without her manager and he is still gaining profit and being employed by the label. There are clearly more issues present than just freedom of expression but what I do think is the most alarming part of this is that the music industry is so large and powerful within out political world due to the fact that it is hard to separate politics from the media that fills our everyday lives. The music label in this situation is setting a precedent in this case that people’s expression is no longer going to be shared if they are in some sort of disagreement with the label or its employees. It should not be precedent that if she has been in some way victimized by an employee of her label that she can no longer produce music.
It brings up the discussion about how limited speech can be when you sign a contract, the largest issue here is that Ke$ha did sign a contract with her company so know they own the rights to her words and she is being silenced because she has to be legally. Her mother has spoken out about this contract and expressed her concerns with how she sees her daughter as a “slave” to the record company. My own personal thought is that if your safety and health have been endangered a contract should not be the most powerful component and you should not be silenced.
